Asia polycarbonate capacity balloons to 2.05 million tonnes per annum by 2028
Additional capacity is expected to be 2.05 million tonnes by 2028.
Asia is likely to be the only region to add polycarbonate capacity from 2024 to 2028, according to GlobalData.
The report stated that the total polycarbonate capacity from new-build and expansion projects is expected to be 2.05 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2028.
China and India are the only countries in Asia to add polycarbonate capacity.
The main capacity additions in China will be from SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Zhangzhou Polycarbonate Plant with a capacity of 0.29 mtpa. It is currently under construction and is expected to commence production in 2026.
Rongsheng New Materials (Taizhou) Co Ltd is also planning to develop two plants in Taizhou, each with a capacity of 0.26 mtpa.
“High demand for polycarbonate in sectors such as packaging, automotive, and construction in countries such as China is a key driver for the growth of the polycarbonate capacity additions in Asia,” Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, said.
“In India, the entire capacity contribution will be from Nayara Energy Vadinar Polycarbonate Plant, located in the state of Gujarat. It is expected to come online in 2028 with a capacity of 0.13 mtpa” he added.
