India’s computer market slumps for fourth quarter in a row: IDC
Despite yearly decline, Q2 orders improved dramatically compared to Q1.
PC shipments in India fell by 15.3% percent year on year in the second quarter, marking its fourth consecutive quarterly decline as big business and consumer orders drop, according to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC).
The report showed the country’s PC market, which covers desktops, notebooks and workstations, shipped 3.2 million units last quarter, down significantly from 3.7 million units a year ago, but 5.9% higher when compared to the first three months of the year.
Declines were recorded across the board, led by notebook shipments which dropped 18.5% from a year ago last quarter, followed by the 7% dip in desktop shipments during the same period.
Meanwhile, the consumer and commercial segments went down by 17% and 13.8% year on year, respectively.
Orders from enterprises remained in the red as big businesses continued to temper their computer purchases. The muted enterprise orders was also the main factor that dragged down shipments of premium notebooks worth US$1,000 and up, which fell 30.7% year on year in the second quarter, but still up 39% versus the preceding three months.
Making up for the slack in enterprise orders are the government and the education sector where PC shipments grew by 8.2% and 43.7%, respectively. According to the report, these two sectors continued to drive the country’s PC market through government-driven education projects and state high court orders, among others.
“The India consumer PC segment has started showing signs of recovery as market sentiment is improving,” said Bharath Shenoy, senior market analyst at IDC India. “PC vendors successfully ran college campaigns and got good traction. The improved performance of their e-tail channels has also provided much needed respite to the consumer segment.”
Broken down by PC brands, HP Inc. led the market accounting for 31% of all the shipments in the second quarter, followed by Lenovo with a 16% market share.
Dell Technologies ranked third making up for 15% of the total shipments, while Acer Group and ASUS had market shares of 11% and 7%, respectively.
